SHOWING OFF YOUR PERSONALITY BY BILL PORTER
Known as America’s pastime, baseball is a game where patience and dealing with
failures are important within the process of being a successful player. Respect for the game is
held at high regard for the players, as there are many unwritten rules that each player must
follow to demonstrate respect for the game and its participants. Some of these unwritten rules
include walking around the catcher and umpire when walking up to the batter’s box, not talking
about a no-hitter as it’s taking place, and not admiring a home run that you hit. Many of these
rules are followed without question, however much like in life, breaking the rules can give a
player the opportunity to step outside their comfort zone and show some creativity.
Breaking the unwritten rule of admiring a home run is a risk that many players take.
When the ball goes over the fence the player has the opportunity to show off their personality,
whether it’s giving the bat a flip or jogging humbly around the bases. When the ball does not
make it over the wall and the batter is admiring his own hit, he has not only broken an unwritten
rule, but he has also failed at interpreting the outcome of his play.
In life, a person has the opportunity to show off his personality when they greet others,
the unwritten rule of a firm handshake and eye contact is the expectation, but many take a risk
and change it up. This allows a person to show their personality and creativity. Creativity to me
is the way a person expresses themselves, whether that’s on the baseball diamond with a bat
flip, or in a friendly greeting. Personality reflects creativity.
