MOTIVATION IS BULLSHIT BY ETHAN POTTS
“Discipline is choosing between what we want now and what you want most” – Abe. Lincoln
My freshman year I was struggling with classes, staying active, and building relationships. I remember I called up my friend complaining, and I told him, “I’m just not motivated to do anything”. He said to me, “That’s your problem, you’re relying on motivation and not discipline”. In my own life I’ve heard and used time and time again, “I don’t feel like doing it right now” or “I’m not motivated to do it” the problem with this is Motivation depends on how you feel in the present moment and that can always change when you are doing an activity, it has no consistency.
Well, why is discipline important? Discipline doesn't depend on how you feel. If you are disciplined, you are going to do what you need to do regardless of anything else. Discipline leads to freedom, and freedom leads to the ability to be creative. Entrepreneurship is a contact sport, and discipline is essential for creative work. For example, if a musician lacks the discipline to practice and make music a little bit every day, he will never be able to make an album. It is important to keep in mind, too much discipline makes it impossible to be creative. Go out and build that discipline.
Be disciplined in doing something new.
Be disciplined in failing.
Be disciplined in silencing your VOJ.
Be disciplined in taking risk.
Be disciplined in practicing creativity.
