THREE MONTH BRAIN VACATION BY MORGAN TRACEY
Nine months of the year I am a list kind of girl who makes twenty to-do lists a day and color
coordinates her life. Everything I do has a meaning and a purpose.
I love my color coordinating self. I love my green brain and the organization that it brings me.
But every nine months I take a vacation from that side of my brain. I trade the lists and order for
fun and creativity.
Summer comes around and for three months I don’t color coordinate. I don’t make lists or time
block every second of my day. I become a different person. I become the summer version of
myself. Each summer I disappear for three months, I take a personal brain vacation. I go and
work at the sleepaway camp that I grew up going to. I go hang out with 12 year olds and
lifeguard at a lake. I sing camp songs and participate in silly camp shows.
I spend my summers working at a sleepaway camp because it’s an opportunity for me to
unleash the creativity within me. I live in a world of lists, a world of order but I always look for the
chances to break out of that box. I struggle everyday to break free of my box, but I know that as
soon as summer comes around I will once again be the creative me.
Every summer I take a brain vacation and unleash the creativity that is always within me. I use
summer as a chance to vacation from the typical me and embrace all creativity. Do you take
brain vacations? Do you let your inner creativity run free?
