"HOW DID THINGS EVER GET SO FAR?" BY GIANMARCO PETRELLI
This past weekend, I had the amazing opportunity to sing at a very prestigious event with the
Miami University Men’s Glee Club.
To get to said event, we had to travel by bus for about 10 hours. To pass the time, there's a
plethora of things to do.
The Glee Club, in a nutshell, is a quirky group of guys who like to have a great time. Either
performing or just hanging out, every experience with these guys is truly unique.
When dealing with musicians, the sort of activities that are appealing are ones that are engaging
and thought provoking.
One activity that the Glee Club loves to engage in is a great game called Mafia.
This immersive role playing game puts a group of people in a situational world where the mafia
secretly votes out a new member every “night” to be killed. The goal of the game is to have a
majority of Mafia members of town members win.
As game players hold deliberations, you have to use persuasion to determine who is playing the
various roles of the game or who may be the mafia.
Another aspect that the Glee Club likes to include when playing is having background music.
But not any old background music, we play The Godfather soundtrack.
This added layer to the experience makes playing Mafia an expansive outlet that stretches your
creative muscle in various ways.
It shows how well you are able to problem solve.
It shows how well you are able to work in any scenario at any given moment.
It pushes your comfort zone and what you may be used to when talking with others.
Not only does the game by design allow you to expand your creative self, I also think that
experiences that include music and sound also have this same magnitude.
The Godfather soundtrack with a game like this may just be a quirky tradition, but it adds a level
of immersion that puts you in the world of a great game.
Games in general challenge your creative tool in countless ways.
As for the title of this post, I grabbed it from one of best quotes from that very movie.
So what I ask you reading this is, how did your creative process things get this far?
