SMELL THE (CREATIVE) ROSES BY ANNE MARIE RICE
The other day I was sitting in King library, and I saw Friedman walking up to the building. Before
coming into the library, he walked over to the outdoor benches, though they were not on his
original path. When he walked in the building I inquired about his schedule for the day. He
informed me that he was speaking to a group in 4 minutes.
I kept thinking about this, because it’s amazing that Friedman still made time to pursue his
curiosity regardless of the fact that he was crunched for time. His curiosity and questioning led
him to stop what he was doing and investigate. Questioning is extremely important, and it’s
something I don’t do enough.
I am guilty of not pursuing my curiosity due to timeliness or lack of initiative. I am guilty of
putting activities in boxes, including creativity, and not letting it permeate my life. Friedman’s
action the other day made me really think about these boxes that I have and the negative
impact that they have on my creative abilities.
The moral of the story- take time to smell the (creative) roses, even when it means going out of
your way or spending an extra moment.
