DEALING WITH CREATIVITY AROUND NON-CREATIVES BY NICK TRENTMAN
Before starting my creative journey I firmly believed that creativity could be defined as thinking outside of the box, but I have learned that there is much more to creativity. This includes things such as creative confidence, willingness to fail, creative processes, etc.
Nowadays when I try to explain a creative project that I am working on to my friends they often give me a look as if what I am doing is dumb, unimportant, or just flat out weird. I have received remarks such as βIs that seriously what you do for class?β At first this really frustrated me as it seemed as if my friends were unsupportive of me taking an unorthodox path. But, what has helped me through this frustration is reflecting back on what I assumed creativity was before I started my creative journey. By doing this I am able to realize that often people take jabs at people for being creative because they do not understand it.
The more that I am around people that are unaccepting of creativity, the more I become appreciative of it. Creativity is what allows for people to break away from mundane day-to-day activities and actually pursue something that excites them. So if you are ever around people that try to belittle you for your creativity, just keep in mind that they are the people who are having opportunities to be great pass them by daily.
