Dare to Laugh
Dare to Laugh
I dare you to laugh.
People are afraid to laugh. They are afraid people will judge them for what they were laughing at and they are afraid that it is not an appropriate time for laughter.
I used to be afraid to laugh. I was terrified that I would be judged by my peers for my bizarre sense of humor. I dreamed of doing something even crazier -- making other people laugh. I have wanted to do standup comedy since I was young.
When I was first able to bury that voice of judgement and actually do standup comedy, I came to realize just how important laughter is. At a time in our world where depression and suicide rates are increasing, laughter is only becoming more important.
Going to a comedy show is not going to solve depression. But it could, if even for just a second, be a slight amusing distraction to whatever hell someone is currently going through.
Laughter is seen as a reward. It's viewed as something someone might indulge in, only if they have time. It should be made a necessary part of everyone's day. Everyone should take at least 10 minutes out of their day to laugh at something. That doesn't have to be standup comedy. It can be scrolling on TikTok or watching a funny TV show. It is such a crucial part of our mental health that is completely overlooked.
So, I dare you to laugh.
