The Creative Process is Messy

The Creative Process is Messy

by Katya Yudushkin

When trying to come up with a creative idea, the ideas and processes need to be perfect. I have always thought that until I started practicing creativity.

Do you know where my best and craziest ideas come from? My messiest and craziest work that goes on behind the scenes.

Creativity is just like painting, it’s an art.
When you look at a painting, you see the beautiful final product. Between the final layer of paint and the canvas, there are numerous amounts of layers and marks that you don’t see. This is where the artist made mistakes and covered them up or turned them into something else.

Do you see that beautiful blue color on the canvas? To make that final blue color, it took blue and a little red, orange, yellow, pink, purple, black, and white. But it wasn’t exactly the right color, so the colors are mixed together again. This time, it took all those colors and a hint of green. And that’s how it is for every color on the canvas.

A few other things that go into creating the final piece of art are the paint under your fingernails, the generated mini messy sketch of what you want the future final painting to look like, paint on your shirt, and probably some paint in your hair and in your face.

Just like painting, creativity is messy. Generating ideas, making mistakes, creating something out of your mistakes, and getting your hands dirty. That is where I find myself to be the most creative.
