My Wonderful World of Curiosity
by Riann Yates-Miller
"I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious." ~ Albert Einstein
For most of my life, I saw “learning” as second nature. The formula was perfected: you hear the lecture, regurgitate and forget everything “learned” quickly after. However, recently the way I see learning has completely changed.
These past months, I spent most of my free time diving deeper into my passion: Analytics. The desire to fill in the gaps became something that excited me so much I couldn’t sleep. From Python to Machine Learning, I found myself falling into a seemingly bottomless pit of curiosity for data.
As I continued to fall deeper, something new developed: curiosity started to affect everything I saw. On a bus, I would begin to wonder how we were moving; Looking at pictures I would wonder “How do cameras camera?”; Even talking prompts “What were the first words in English and how do languages come to be?”. I developed so many questions that I began keeping a Curiosity Journal keeping track of these deep dives. And not only has it allowed me to become more knowledgeable, but it has made me admire what a gorgeous world we live in.
Now what does this mean for you?
While I can’t promise you million dollar ideas, I do truly believe that a curious mind allows you to unlock the beauties, faults and unsolved mysteries of our world. Because of curiosity I developed in four months what school couldn’t in 15, the true joys of learning.
