Becoming Myself Again
by Natalie Silk
I believe I have always tried to take a more creative approach. For example, when I was younger, I wanted to be just like Selena Gomez (an actress and a singer). I would create and put on performances with my cousin at family gatherings. For a while, I had that idea of who I wanted to be in the back of my mind until the end of middle school. Then when it came to high school there was all this pressure to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. It, of course, had to be something practical and realistic according to my parents. However, I didn't want a boring desk job like everyone else and I was NOT going to be a nurse like my mom (if only you had heard some of the stories she would come home with). I always knew I wanted a job where I could have creative freedom to tackle different problems. It took me a couple of years to decide that I wanted to go into marketing, even then my parents wanted me to go into finance. But I love designing and creating. I lost my creative drive to be different due to other people's judgment and my own VOJ. Now I strive to gain back what I once had to be bold and be creative; to be myself.
