CREATIVITY IS IN INTERPRETATION BY KATE TRYBUS

CREATIVITY IS IN INTERPRETATION BY KATE TRYBUS

Creativity has always been taboo for me. When I was younger, I could never color inside the lines of coloring pages as hard as I tried. In elementary and middle school art classes, my work was always fine, but never something I was really, truly proud of. Early in my life, I decided that creativity is directly related to your skills as a visual artist, and that was something I lacked. And then, I entered high school and was introduced to the study of voice. As a 15 year old whose dream was Broadway, I turned my nose up at songs in German and Italian until one day, I gave them a shot. It was love at first sight. I was able to bring centuries-old words and melodies to life through my life’s lens. I learned that creativity does not solely exist inside the lines of a coloring page, but all around me.

At Miami University, the music department is in the College of Creative Arts, a name I just now truly understand the importance of. In my four years here, I have been challenged to bring to life the music of composers long gone through my own experiences. Maybe I cannot come up with the words to express life’s inexplicable joys and pains, but through my careful examination and unique, creative interpretation, the melodies of great composers like Mozart, Puccini, and Lehár can.
