THE CHALLENGES OF CREATIVITY BY WILL THURMER

Why is creativity so hard?

I would consider myself to be a creative person. I like to think outside of the box and solve problems in ways that others don’t tend to think about. Sometimes I think that other people would even describe me as being creative.

Despite this, I struggle so much to get up and be creative. As Friedman has said, “Creativity is not hard. What is hard is sitting down to be creative.” I don’t know if Friedman said that or if he was quoting someone else, but it’s true, nonetheless.

What I have learned is that creativity is a muscle. Just like so many other things in life, creativity behaves like a muscle that you have to work and tear away at so that it can grow back stronger. You can’t get bigger muscles by sitting around and you can’t become more creative without attempting creativity.

The biggest area of my life where I struggle to be creative is with homework. I have always hated homework. So, when being creative is your homework, it becomes even more challenging. I have had to change my mindset about homework and creativity so that I can build those muscles. Because I know that at the end of the day…

It’s worth it.
