COMFORT IS A TRAP BY LUCAS O' BRIEN

COMFORT IS A TRAP BY LUCAS O' BRIEN

Growing up, I was forced to realize that I would have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.

I was born in Australia. Six months later my family was on their way to New Jersey. A year and a half after that we made our way to Chicago, then to Connecticut, then to California, back to Connecticut, finally back to New Jersey and now I find myself in Ohio. Moving around this much when I was young was not fun. You never get used to being the ‘new kid’ at school and let me be clear it is incredibly uncomfortable. But looking back, it’s those uncomfortable memories that ended in the most pride and joy.

Something that has always irked me, is society’s obsession with being comfortable. Think of all the scientists, politicians, athletes, actors and actresses, business moguls, etc. that you look up to. How many of them do you think found success when they were comfortable? Being comfortable is like being stagnant because during periods of comfort there’s no drive or strive for anything more. If your end goal is to find comfort than you are wasting your aspirations on the easy part of life.

Being uncomfortable isn’t fun or easy but it takes you somewhere. Comfort is a trap. It’s a distraction, an excuse, a pathway that leads nowhere. Seek discomfort, and watch what happens.
