Is talent something people are born with?
Or
Is talent a word we use to describe people who have worked really hard at one thing?
Whenever you see someone whose singing causes you to well up with emotions, whose acting brings you to tears, or whose jokes momentarily hinder your ability to breathe, you tend to assume those people have talent.
I think we can all agree that most people aren’t born with world-class talent. When we see people at the top of their game crushing the competition, we assume that they worked very hard to get there.
I find this thought comforting. I don’t like the idea of being born with a genetic advantage in a particular skill. I would rather believe that my skill is a result of my hard work and not because of something I was born with.
This is how I have approached playing the guitar. There have been many times where I have failed playing a difficult riff and had to slow down and work hard in order to learn it. There have been many times where I have had to be creative in order to not get bored with the guitar. Either by playing a song I thought was too difficult or by playing an easy song in a different way, I use creativity to keep myself interested.
I never gave up the guitar because I innovated, persevered, and trusted that I would get better at it.
