SEX, DRUGS, AND POLITICS BY NATALIE WALSH
6 months ago I would have avoided talking about sex, drugs, and politics… especially in class. It’s important to maintain professionalism and have polite conversations… Right? However not in the creativity world.
So, what exactly is a polite conversation?
“Conversation that is made with someone because they are with you and not because you really want to talk to them”
What do you talk about during these “polite conversations”?
The weather? The news?… BORING!
The key is to keep these conversations “light, interesting, and non-controversial” according to universalclass.com
But what’s the fun in that?
How can we expect to grow if all we are doing is having is these polite conversations?
We can’t. These polite conversations don’t encourage growth. They only encourage us to listen to our VOJ. As long as we stick to polite conversation, we are avoiding taking risks every single day.
Controversy, disagreement, and debates are good. They challenge us and welcome us to learn new perspectives. These new perspectives can allow us to practice empathy and overall benefit our creativity.
Ask questions. Seek out interesting people. Push boundaries. Challenge the idea of normalcy. And talk about sex, drug, politics, and anything else that makes your VOJ scream.
