A DEFINING MOMENT BY HAILEY LOWE
We all have one defining moment, or often times many defining moments that shape who we are.
I have had many experiences, big and small, that have challenged me mentally and physically;
however, they do not compare to what I faced when I was 6 months old.
I was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric cancer, Retinoblastoma. Surgically removing my
right eye was the only way to save my life, which resulted in a permanent loss of vision in that
eye.
I now wear a prosthetic and it serves as one of my biggest insecurities.
Although this disadvantage begins in my mind as an anxious memory, it has caused me to
approach life with perseverance, pride and joy.
Likewise, this moment has cultivated my creativity and my ability to be empathetic toward
others. I have learned to respect myself and my values, which has in turn allowed me to better
respect others.
After all, we all have defining moments that shape who we are.
We all have a story.
