DEFINE YOUR SHIP BY JARED DALY

DEFINE YOUR SHIP BY JARED DALY

There is a paradox called The Ship of Theseus that can be briefly summarized below.

Greek hero Theseus had a ship that he used as he traveled from island to island in the Aegean Sea. As he ventured on one particular journey, the boards on his ship needed to be replaced. One-by-one during this journey, each of the individual boards was swapped for a new board. The question that arises from this adventure: As Theseus reached his destination, is he riding on the same ship?

The theory of emergence suggests that since the composition of the whole ship is reflected by the summation of its parts, and all of the parts have changed individually, then the ship itself is inherently changed as well.

Spatiotemporal continuity theory suggests that since the integrity of the ship itself existed throughout the entire duration of the journey; it is in fact the same ship at the end despite its gradual progression.

Each of us must take inventory to ask the same question and reflect on the changes that we have made during our time as students at Miami. There have been so many critical experiences which have cultivated our personality. Throughout the changes of our brain development, character solidification, and relationship evolution, are you riding a new ship to your destination? Or, despite every piece perhaps being slightly and gradually changed, are you traveling on the original ship?
