CREATING CREATIVITY: A KID’S-EYE VIEW BY MARILYN ZUBAK

CREATING CREATIVITY: A KID’S-EYE VIEW BY MARILYN ZUBAK

Creativity is unlearned as we grow older—this is clear from TedTalks, studies, and personal reflection.

We are most creative when we are kids. Kids don’t judge, they don’t think, they don’t doubt, they just .

While babysitting a five and four year old, I set up a craft day to see this creativity firsthand. From making dogs that used trees as toys to purple dinosaurs that lived in a flower, they made pictures that were out of the box to say the least. It was clear the kids were artistic, creative, and most of all proud of their work.

While painting, I asked they kids what they think of creativity. The five-year-old boy responded, “What’s creativity?”

As we grow older, creativity is unlearned and to compensate we try to force it and learn it back. We the meaning of creativity, what it is, how to improve it, how to practice it, where to start. But we’re doing it wrong. Creativity is all about the execution, not the defining.

The next time you are trying to explain creativity, don’t just say. Do.
