WE DON'T NEED NO THOUGHT CONTROL BY MARYANNE SMITH
“I used to be smart - then I went to college”
I use to devour books, read newspapers, play sports, and teach myself new skills like
cooking or playing the piano. I was far more creative and educated.
Then I came to Miami and the game changed. Now my job was not to be educated, it
was to shove facts into my head and spit them back out on exams. I stopped truly
learning and lost my creative confidence.
I spend all my time studying, doing homework, going to group meetings, and developing
myself as a leader. I am growing in character, work capacity, and in my knowledge of a
few specific areas.
College is helping me grow, but it’s also taking away my ability and willingness to
pursue my natural curiosities. Entrepreneurship classes and professors encourage me
to fight that trend, but I still feel a little like Sisyphus.
Every step I take to open up time in my schedule, I end up taking two steps backward
and filling that time with new responsibilities and difficult classes. I win and lose this
battle every day. I am so grateful for the education I am receiving, but I question how
effective it is every day.
