WHAT HAPPENED TO CREATIVITY? BY BRETT SCHAAF
When I was a kid, I dressed up in fancy outfits and wore feathery hats and a mountain of beads. I built
elaborate structures in an attempt to catch the leprechaun every year on Saint Patrick’s Day and I
created imaginative games for my entire neighborhood to play together. When my First Communion
rolled around, I even sewed my own dress that was purple rather than white because I didn’t want to be
the same as everyone else.
My mom used to lay out a long, blank sheet of paper on our back patio, handed me some paint and
some crayons, and encouraged me to draw anything I wanted. No lines, no direction, no expectation.
That paper was mine, and I could take it whatever direction I wanted.
You, too, are sitting here with a blank sheet of paper that is your life in front of you. You get to take it
whatever direction you want. What will you do with it?
