Soundtrack To My Life
My dad started playing drums when he was 9 years old and played in bands throughout
high school, college and post grad. He did everything, played little side gigs, taught students,
judged competition marching bands and even played in my church’s band. It was his purpose.
My mom was the same way. She played a little bit of everything throughout high school and
college, so much so that she had to take a fifth year because she was too involved in her college
band.
My parents stuck me in my middle school and high school’s band program until they
realized I was never going to have the same love for playing music that they did. While I didn’t
love playing music, I still loved being around it. Music is the reason I was a dancer for 15 years.
I love the way it touches my soul, forces emotions out of me and puts into words what I feel
better than I could. Even after I graduated high school and retired from dancing, music is still
what brings me the most peace, grounds me and makes me feel most like myself.
