The Importance of Independence
It feels so much safer to be constantly around people at all times, whether that's going to
the grocery store with your roommate or sitting in a room with someone not even talking and
doing your own thing, or even using the buddy system when going to the bathroom. You can’t be
caught DEAD going to the bathroom by yourself.
Step out of that safety bubble. Take a moment and push yourself to do something by
yourself. Start off easy, and just go run an errand alone. You can slowly work your way up to
going and sitting at a restaurant by yourself or seeing a movie. Just know, no one is looking at
you weird because you are alone. The moment I made a conscious decision to not hold myself
back to what other people wanted to do and other schedules I found my relationship with myself
flourishing. It allowed me to expand my horizons and finally be able to have experiences that I
have wanted to that my friends maybe did not. The freedom that comes with being comfortable
by yourself allows you to explore your own interests that if you just stuck to the safeness in
numbers you may have never found.
