TIME ISN'T SOMETHING TO LOSE, IT IS SOMETHING TO CHOOSE BY KAT GODDIN
When given tasks growing up, I was always told, “Just do it right the first time.” I have lived under this mindset my whole life. I structure everyday based on productivity. Often, we strive to get things done (school, work, errands, etc.) in the fastest, most efficient way. We are always gauging our success based on how much we have achieved in that day or week.
However, having this mindset when approaching creativity has only led to failure. This limited structure has left me little space for imagination. You can not put a time limit on creativity or only judge the experience based on the end result. Fixating all of the value on the final product shields you from growth obtained from the creative process.
The multidimensional beauty of creativity involves failing multiple times, learning from mistakes, and taking risks. These essential steps in the process open doors and cultivate ideas that could never form if just focused on efficiency. There is not a “right way” or a straight line to the solution. The first idea that surfaces is not always the best.
