BEING AN ORGANIZED CREATIVE BY RACHEL MARTIN
When I joined the entrepreneurship department I was daunted by the idea of being creative. Creativity was for artsy, inventive people and I did not think of myself like this. I like lists, structure, and organization. But through my work in pushing myself for innovation and creativity, I realized these skills don’t have to be a hindrance but my superpower. I now structure time to be creative. It has become a large part of my daily routine. There is a stack of post-its sitting on my desk that I reach for daily to write down what I call change thoughts. These are things I could do to change up my habits and routines to improve myself. For example, I recently decided to do yoga in the morning 3 times a week rather than my normal exercises, and I’ve been loving it. I wouldn’t have changed my daily routine had I not made the time to think about ways to innovate my day. By organizing time for myself to be focused on innovation and change I have been able to try a lot of new things that have totally changed my perspective such as reading 3 quick news emails a day, gaining problem-solving skills from playing video games, learning Spanish, and reading historical novels. To me creativity is change, it is constantly trying to innovate myself, trying new things, and gaining new perspectives.
