TO THE UNCONVENTIONAL, CONVENTIONAL CREATIVES BY GRACE WEAVER
We are taught from an early age that creativity is a physical ability, and how well you can draw or sing, or dance provides a tangible measure of your creativity.
For many, that’s what led them to believe they weren’t creative. For me, it led me to believe that I was.
I was an artist, and, in my mind, that was synonymous with a creative.
I never challenged that belief until I discovered that creativity was a process, not an ability. That shift in mindset simultaneously set me free and onset an impending sense of doom.
I realized that I didn’t want to be the artist anymore, and I was tired of being the design monkey.
I wanted to create purpose, not paintings.
To guide, not be guided.
To make stories, not logos.
But the years I spent believing I was an artist unintentionally created a brand founded in my physical work and nothing more. I had reacted as if it was true, forcing my intangible creativity into the background.
That brand was holding me back. So now, I need to find a new one.
That journey is still ongoing.
But hear me, all those who are like me, stuck in the mold of a conventional creative and want to be anything but: let’s dare to show the world what we can do.
And to those who still think I’m a designer and nothing more: I urge you to look beyond the logo.
