MEME, MYSELF AND I BY DOMINIC PANTORNO
A meme, according to Google, is “a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc. that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users.” There are so many people that think these pictures, these jokes that accumulate so quickly, are a waste of time. They think that they’re just some stupid jokes, a useless part of this generation… but that’s none of my business.
As I sip my tea on this gloomy rainy day, I think about why a meme is so much more than that. To me, a meme is a creative outlet to express issues in society or politics, or as to why a college kid has to eat ramen every night, since he’s running out of meal swipes. Memes come with endless opportunities to be creative and artistic, while cracking some incredible jokes while we’re at it. They bring people together, and give the old folks a way to relate to the “hip-and-with-it” youngsters. Memes will probably end up in some history textbook in the future as a key element to our generation’s culture. So I sit here, with my fist balled to my side and my eyes fixed on the beautiful image on my computer, perfectly enrapturing my college experience. Memes. Dreams. Endless outlets for that creative side you’ve been hiding.
