THE CREATIVITY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO GREG BY DAVID DALY
This semester I have drank the Kool-Aid in ESP 252 and have an appreciation for Dr. Friedman’s vision for creativity – The Gospel according to Jim. While all the tools he has shared with students are great, but without being able to apply these principles to the outside world and my life, they are somewhat useless. For this reason, I decided to go way out of my comfort zone and talk to President Crawford about the role of creativity both in Oxford and outside of Miami’s bubble. Some of my favorite quotes from Dr. Crawford include: “Creativity has been a constant in my career…the path to such discovery is not marked, and creativity is necessary to make progress.” “Creativity is a vital 21st century competency in any field. The dynamic changes in society, technology, science, engineering, and other fields require the ability to envision new possibilities and unexpected connections that keep a person in front of changes.” “My creative problem-solving depends on quiet time in reflection and assessment.” “The more creative you could be to solve problems relevant to the company and its mission, the most successful you would be… I start with the most creative possible answer and then see how to fit it into the boundary conditions.” President Crawford was able to provide an insight to me that extended well beyond the classroom. I look forward to fostering a relationship with him in the future and further discussions about how creativity has impacted his personal and professional life.
