Each morning we wake up and mindlessly scroll through Instagram posts, snapchat stories, and twitter feeds yet we do not realize the effect that this has on us. With each story that we tap through or each post that we like, we slowly become conventional.

Filters, stories, and editing apps advertise “enhancements” or “effects” in an effort to make users feel as though they can show their followers their impressive vision or perspective. However, are the same 10 filters or 5 text options actually making us more creative or doing the opposite?

Are we in fact succumbing to conventionality by trying to adopt the same aesthetic as our friends?

Do “influensters” help us to become our best selves or do they allow us to conform to the norms of social media?

Is being a social media rule follower any different than memorizing material just to ace an exam?

The next time you post a picture, break the typical posting conventions- post without a caption, break your Instagram aesthetic, and live life unfiltered.
