WHAT-IF WILLYS BY SARAH MCGUIRE

WHAT-IF WILLYS BY SARAH MCGUIRE

“Be quiet and sit down”. These are words that I heard throughout my entire elementary and middle school years. Although it was easy to see a teacher trying to discipline an interrupting student who was veering the class off-topic, what happened below the surface was much more damaging. I was consistently discouraged from asking “what if willy’s”, which is what my teacher started calling my questions. Eventually, I stopped speaking up and at some point, I stopped being curious all together.

These years to my life were extremely damaging to my curious spirit, and I’ve since then have tried to get it back. I’ve become subjected to the constrictive mold of the American education system, and I’m trying to break free. This drive to return to the level of creative genius that I once had is what motivated me to become involved in the Entrepreneurship program, and to push myself each and every day to learn beyond my comfort zone.

I used to question everything. I was always wondering how things worked. I would always ask “why”? I had so many questions about the universe and what our existence means. Now, I sit and nod. I hope to regain this curiosity about the world and to go back to questioning everything around me.
